Strain description
- Very commonly used outbred rat.
- Females are good foster mothers.
- Tendency to become very fat with age.
- Spontaneous clonic convulsions have been reported.
- Young females are very active.
- Barbering is commonly observed.
- Originally bred at the Wistar Institute from albino stock purchased in 1906. Widely disseminated throughout the world since 1911.
- Breeding stock refreshed from Charles River Laboratories, USA. Passed directly into the SPF barrier after quarantine in flexible film isolator to verify SPF status.
- Imported in Animal Resource Centre (ARC) Western Australia in 1999.
- Stock strain is transferred to Ozgene ARC in 2023
