Strain description

  • Haplotype: RT1n.
  • The BN strain is a docile rat.
  • Low litter average: 4.5.
  • Median lifespan is around 28-31 months.
  • Histocompatibility: RT1n, RT2a or RT2b, RT3b, RT8b.
  • Substrains vary with respect to Pep-3 and RT2.
  • Low plasma ceruloplasmin levels.
  • Hyper-responsive lungs.
  • Hydronephrosis and hydroureter common.
  • Dimethylbenzanthracene induced a transplantable myeloid leukemia.
  • High incidence of urinary bladder and ureteral carcinomas in older males.
  • Moderate incidence of pituitary adenomas in older animals
  • Resistant to experimental allergic encephalomyelitis.
  • Resistant to induction of autologous immune complex glomerulonephritis
  • Low activity of NK cells compared with other rat strains.
  • Higher percentage of paradoxical sleep than LEW.
  • Susceptible to the development of mercury-induced autoimmunity to renal basement membranes.
  • Immunologic model as the strain is unique in its expression of the high lgE – responder phenotype.
  • Low preference for ethanol and low capability to develop acute tolerance to ethanol hypnosis.
  • BN/RijHsd rats were derived from a nucleus colony obtained directly from the TNO Institute, the Netherlands.
  • Received from Animal Resource Centre (ARC) in 2023.
  • Behaviour, hydronephrosis, cancer research, myelocytic leukemia, aging, HgCl2-induced nephritis.
