- Histocompatibility: RT1n, RT2a or RT2b, RT3b, RT8b.
- Substrains vary with respect to Pep-3 and RT2.
- Low plasma ceruloplasmin levels.
- Hyper-responsive lungs.
- Hydronephrosis and hydroureter common.
- Dimethylbenzanthracene induced a transplantable myeloid leukemia.
- High incidence of urinary bladder and ureteral carcinomas in older males.
- Moderate incidence of pituitary adenomas in older animals
- Resistant to experimental allergic encephalomyelitis.
- Resistant to induction of autologous immune complex glomerulonephritis
- Low activity of NK cells compared with other rat strains.
- Higher percentage of paradoxical sleep than LEW.
- Susceptible to the development of mercury-induced autoimmunity to renal basement membranes.
- Immunologic model as the strain is unique in its expression of the high lgE – responder phenotype.
- Low preference for ethanol and low capability to develop acute tolerance to ethanol hypnosis.
- BN/RijHsd rats were derived from a nucleus colony obtained directly from the TNO Institute, the Netherlands.
