Cage density, 7-week policy & timed-mates
Cage density, 7-week policy & timed-mates
We are excited to introduce refinements and improvements to our ordering process, including a “Desired Cage Density” for male mice, ordering mice over 7 weeks, and the availability of timed-mated and pregnant mice. We are also pleased to share our first health report since the animals have settled into our new permanent facility.
Hello from our new facility
We are happy to report that the move to our new, state-of-the-art facility was successfully completed on 14 December 2024. Everything went smoothly, and the animals are happy and healthy in their new home.
This modernised space accommodates both our custom-generated mouse lines and our mouse and rat stock strains, organised into four vivariums to maintain separate biosecurity statuses. Stock mouse colonies are strategically divided across multiple vivariums, mitigating risks and ensuring services continue in the event of a biosecurity breach in any single area.
You will notice a new list layout on our Biosecurity webpage to reflect the areas in our new facility. At present, there is a new health report from vivarium 3, where some of our mouse stock strains reside, and we will add further reports as they become available.
Ordering mice over 7 weeks
Our data shows that 92% of mice are purchased by the time they reach 7 weeks of age. To better utilise space in our facility, we will now only maintain mice up to 7 weeks of age. Don’t worry, you can still order older mice, but you will need to do so by the time they reach 7 weeks. For instance, if you require 9-week-old mice, please place your order two weeks before you plan to receive them.
This update takes effect from Thursday, 20 February, for all mouse stock strains. If you have any questions or concerns, we are here to help.
Improved male mice shipping
Receiving male mice can be challenging if your facility’s cage density differs from the configuration in the shipping container, as combining adult males may lead to fighting. Great news! Our ordering portal now includes a “Desired Cage Density” option when you order male mice.
You can enter a desired density to suit your facility’s cage density or experimental grouping. Plese note that lower cage densities may require more shipping containers, potentially increasing shipping costs. We aim to ship animals in the most economical multiples of your chosen density. For example, if the density is 4, we can ship in groups of 4 or 8.
You do not need to provide a desired cage density if it is not important for you. As a standard, we will allocate groups of 8 males when available. This is the most cost-effective way to ship male mice, using the least amount of shipping containers. You will receive 8 males in 2 shipping partitions (16 total in a shipper).
Please be aware that while we do our best to accommodate your requested density, it is not guaranteed. Availability within smaller colonies may be limited, and our pre-shipment health checks can sometimes change the shipping configuration.
Timed-mated animals now available
We have successfully completed our timed-mating trials and now offer timed-mated and pregnant mice for selected strains (ARC(s), BALB/c, C57BL/6J). This service is available by email through our customer service team and will be added to the ordering portal in the coming weeks. For now, to place your order, please email arc@ozgene.com or fill in our contact form.
